A Special February Adventure

Every trip I take has its own charm, but this February visit to California was particularly memorable. Despite being familiar with the Golden State, this trip had its own unique magic—especially with Disney’s Sweetheart’s Night on my bucket list for years.

Although my itinerary changed a bit, the journey was filled with delightful surprises and charming discoveries. From thrilling Disney moments to serene beach sunsets, this trip had it all. Here’s a look at where I stayed, what I wore, and the must-see spots that made this adventure unforgettable.

Where I Stayed

I stayed in Fountain Valley, which is a safe and convenient location about 12 miles from major attractions like Disney. As a solo traveler, I found it to be an ideal spot for easy access to both the city and the beach. If you’re looking for a cozy and affordable Airbnb experience, check out the link below for some of my top suggestions for solo travelers:

For those who prefer hotel stays or want additional options, here are some great choices in and around the area:

  • Ayres Hotel Fountain Valley: A comfortable and well-rated option right in Fountain Valley, offering a complimentary breakfast and a pleasant stay.
  • Best Western Plus Park Place Inn – Mini Suites: Located in nearby Anaheim, this hotel offers spacious rooms and a complimentary breakfast, making it a convenient choice for Disney visitors.
  • The Ranch at Laguna Beach: For a more upscale experience, this resort in Laguna Beach provides a tranquil setting with easy access to the coast.
  • Hilton Anaheim: Situated close to Disneyland, this hotel offers a range of amenities including a pool and dining options.

Whether you choose an Airbnb for a homey stay or a hotel for extra amenities, these options will ensure a great experience during your California adventure.

What I Wore

My trip was about six days long, including travel days. The weather was quite chilly, so I packed a mix of warm and casual outfits, including a flannel and ripped jeans for everyday wear. For Disney’s Sweetheart’s Night, I went all out with a custom shirt from local stylist Fatima of Aliefendic, featuring black with pink details. I paired it with a pink jacket, custom “Sweetheart” Mickey ears, Valentine’s Day high-top platform Converse, and a pink heart-shaped purse. My outfit was completed with Valentine’s-themed nails and a custom black hoodie with “Lover Babe” on the back and a heart organ patch on the front.

The Party Experience

The Disney Sweethearts Night event kicks off with early access to the park—three whole hours before the party officially begins! This is the perfect opportunity to get a jump on your favorite rides and attractions. I made sure to ride Space Mountain—my all-time favorite ride—multiple times, all before the event officially started. The best part? The park was practically empty, and I was able to explore with little to no wait.

One of the highlights of the night was meeting Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen. I had such a blast seeing them up close! Another fun stop was It’s a Small World—the ride had a charming, whimsical vibe that perfectly matched the evening’s mood.

Throughout the night, I was treated to delicious Valentine’s-themed snacks, including chocolate and strawberry churros and bear-ia (birria) fries—seriously, these were a must-try! With the evening getting a little chilly, I kept warm with several cups of hot chocolate as I roamed around the park.

At the event, you’re given a special lanyard, a cute souvenir that shows you’re part of the party. Plus, the park closes early to regular ticket holders, so the attractions are left with little to no lines—making it the perfect time to visit your favorite rides without the usual wait times.

One of my favorite touches was the wristband they gave us. It had a scan code that allowed the staff to easily upload any photos taken during the event directly to your Disney app. That way, you could relive those magical moments anytime!

Going Solo ?

While Disney Sweethearts Night is a fantastic family event, it definitely felt like it was aimed more toward adult couples. That being said, it’s also totally family-friendly and perfect for friends, too! But I have to say, I had an absolute blast on my own. There’s something magical about enjoying the event solo — you can take everything at your own pace, explore the park freely, and make the experience entirely your own.

I got to go on my favorite ride, Space Mountain, multiple times without having to wait in long lines, and it was honestly so freeing to roam around and enjoy the Valentine’s themed snacks, meet characters, and snap photos without any pressure. Whether you’re soaking in the decorations or grabbing a snack, the event offers plenty of fun for anyone, whether you’re with a group or flying solo.

Must-See Spots

Although Disneyland’s Sweetheart’s Night was the highlight of this trip, I explored several other unique places that each added their own special touch to my stay.

  • Aquarium of the Pacific: Explore one of the largest aquariums in the U.S. with engaging exhibits and interactive displays.
  • Anti Mall Lab: A quirky shopping spot in Costa Mesa with a variety of vendors and the delicious Good Town Donuts.
  • Great Park: Originally planned to visit a tethered hot air balloon ride and carousel, but both were closed during my visit. Still worth checking out in better weather.
  • Harbor/Pier Area: Adjacent to the aquarium, this area features numerous shops and stands.
  • Pacific City (Huntington Beach): Perfect for a beachside sunset. The mall across from the beach has outdoor chairs facing the ocean, where I relaxed with an elderberry lemonade.

Food Highlights

  • Good Town Donuts: The strawberry cheesecake donut was a standout treat. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Costa Mesa!
  • Food Trucks Near the Aquarium: Explore a street filled with food trucks for some fantastic tacos.
  • American Dream: Enjoyed a delicious meal with a great view from the roof-level outdoor seating.

Travel Tips

  • Book Sweetheart’s Night Tickets Early: Tickets are released around December, so be prepared for a lengthy virtual queue to secure your spot.
  • Dress in Layers: While being cute at Disney is fun, a thicker jacket would have been helpful as most of the events are at night.
  • Explore Local Eats: Check out food trucks and local dining spots for unique and delicious bites.
  • Take Advantage of Sunset Views: Find a nice spot with outdoor seating to enjoy a sunset by the beach for a memorable end to your day.
